Have you ever typed a command into the Linux terminal out of sheer curiosity and discovered a whole new world?

That’s exactly what happened to me when I simply typed awk in a Debian distribution: instead of an error message, the system responded immediately by displaying a list of options and practical examples.

From there, I discovered that AWK is a staple of Unix-like systems, almost always pre-installed by default in one of its modernized variants (such as gawk for GNU AWK or mawk).

AWK is both a programming language and an interpreter designed specifically to process text files line by line.

It was created in the 1970s at the renowned Bell Labs by three pioneers of computer science: Alfred V. Aho, Peter J. Weinberger, and Brian W. Kernighan.

The name “AWK” is actually an acronym formed from their three last names.

In the world of free software and Unix, naming a tool after real people is almost a tradition:

  • Linux: Linus Torvalds initially wanted to call the system Freax (a combination of free, freak, and the X from Unix). It was Ari Lemmke, the administrator of the university FTP server onto which the source code was uploaded, who renamed the folder Linux (from Linus + Unix), a name that Torvalds then decided to keep.

  • Debian: The name comes from the romantic fusion of the names Debra Lynn (the creator’s girlfriend at the time and later wife) and Ian Murdock.

  • BASH (Bourne-Again SHell): A playful pun based on the earlier Bourne Shell (sh), developed by Stephen Bourne.

AWK’s true strength lies in the extraordinary simplicity with which it allows you to extract columns, filter rows, perform quick calculations, and generate text reports without having to write complex scripts.

When AWK reads a file, it automatically splits each line into fields separated by spaces or tabs:

  • $1 represents the first field (first column).

  • $2 represents the second field.

  • $3 represents the third field.

  • $0 represents the entire line.

4. AWK in action: some practical examples

Let’s create a simple text file called test.txt to test the syntax:

To extract only the first field of each line:

Result:

4.2. Filtering data based on a condition (Age over 28)

To select the first and last names only for those over 28 years old:

In this command, $3 > 28 is the condition, while {print $1, $2} represents the action performed only on the lines that meet the criterion.

Another very useful operation is calculating numerical totals on the fly. For example, to sum all the ages in the third column:

awk ‘{sum += $3} END {print “Total age:”, sum}’ test.txt

The variable somma accumulates the value of the third field for each line, while the special END block prints the accumulated total only after the file has been fully read.

AWK fully embodies the Unix philosophy: “Write programs that do one thing and do it well, designed to work together.”

Thanks to the pipe (|) mechanism, AWK works best when chained with other command-line commands. It can process the output stream from utilities such as grep, sort, ls, ps, or df in real time:

Practical example: If you want to monitor disk space using df -h and extract only the usage percentage and the mount point, simply pipe the output to AWK:

df -h | awk ‘{print $5, $6}’

6. AWK vs. Python: Is It Still Useful Today?

Although it has now been around for over fifty years, AWK remains an irreplaceable tool for:

  • Analyzing small CSV or TSV files;

  • Inspecting log files;

  • Formatting the output of system commands;

  • Building fast Unix pipelines.

Many operations that in Python would require writing a dedicated script involving opening the file and using loops:

    for line in f:

Of course, you can compact Python code from the terminal using the -c flag:

python3 -c “for l in open(‘test.txt’): print(l.split()[0])

Or to calculate the sum of the ages:

However, even when compared to a modern and efficient language like Python, AWK wins hands down in terms of immediacy, natural command-line syntax, and brevity for on-the-fly text operations.
